Canadian ferry operator Marine Atlantic has entered into a 5-year charter agreement with Stena North Sea Ltd. to supply a new dual-fuel Ro-Pax vessel for its fleet.
Following the five-year charter agreement, Marine Atlantic will have an option to purchase the vessel.
In addition to dual-fuel technology, the vessel will be equipped with batteries to further reduce its carbon footprint. The ship will also offer enhanced power and thruster capability for maximum manoeuvring ability during docking and undocking.
‘As an essential service and vital part of the national supply chain, this new vessel will play an important role in helping us to continue to meet the needs of our customers,’ said Gary O’Brien, Chair, Board of Directors, Marine Atlantic. ‘The design of the vessel combines key priorities such as maneuverability, safety, accessibility, while minimising environmental impacts, to provide our customers with a modern, efficient and reliable service.’
The ship, which will be compatible for use on both the Port aux Basques and Argentia services in Newfoundland, is expected to enter service in the 2024-25 fiscal year.
