The NGO High Ambition Climate Collective (HACC) has informed Bunkerspot that its inaugural workshop in San Francisco last week (25-26 March) brought together experts and stakeholders from across the maritime sector to develop strategies for climate action at ports.
In a statement sent to Bunkerspot today (2 April), HACC said that the discussions and work groups focused on three ‘critical themes’: policy levers, technological innovation and financing sustainable development at ports.
The event opened with a site visit to America's first hydrogen-powered ferry, the Sea Change, moored at San Francisco’s Pier 9 which was led by SWITCH Maritime LLC’s COO, Elias Van Sickle.
The workshop participants included: Commissioner Kristin Ang, President of the Port of Tacoma Commission and Managing Member of the Northwest Seaport Alliance; Bonnie Nixon, Director of Sustainability, Long Beach Container Terminal; Adam Browning, Executive Vice President of Policy & Communications at Forum Mobility, which focuses on charging depots and heavy-duty electric trucks for zero-emission drayage; and Ellie Dean, a Senior Civil Engineer with Arup.
Cassidy Fisher, Program Director for Joint Innovation with Washington Maritime Blue, said that the workshop ‘emphasised the urgency of addressing climate change and promoting sustainable practices within our ports and maritime operations’.
HACC added that the next steps for its programme will include the development of its ‘action-oriented toolkit’ that will ‘help port ecosystem stakeholders navigate climate action planning, development and implementation’.
