COSCO Shipping and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC) have signed a memorandum of cooperation to develop what they describe as an LNG dual fuel very large crude carrier (VLCC).
The companies announced their partnership last week during COSCO’s annual customer conference in Shanghai.
The vessel, which will reportedly be the world's first EEDI Phase 3-compliant VLCC, will use LNG as its main fuel.
DNV GL awarded DISC’s dual-fuel VLCC design its approval in principle (AiP) in December 2015. In its public statement announcing the AiP in 2015, DNV GL said that the design’s ‘LNG fuel tanks give the vessel the capability of performing a round trip from the Middle East to the US without refuelling’.
