Marine fuel sales for 2019 totalled 47.46 million metric tonnes (mt), the lowest annual figure since 2015, but IMO 2020 low sulphur fuel sales continued to show vigorous and sustained growth.
Preliminary estimates of marine fuel sales in December from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore showed a year-on-year monthly increase in December sales from 4.3 million mt in 2019 to 4.65 million mt.
As to be expected in the run up to IMO 2020, high sulphur marine fuel oil (MFO) 380 volumes continued the downwards slide seen toward the end of year with 1.164 million mt sold in December, compared to 1.523 million mt in November.
Low sulphur marine gasoil (LSMGO) volumes followed the broadly upwards trend seen across 2019, ending the year with a monthly sale of 407,300 mt compared to November’s 374,400 mt.
Low sulphur fuel oil 380 sales showed a strong surge in December, rising from 1.29 million mt in November (which was significantly up from the 459,300 mt recorded in October) to reach 2.25 million mt.
