Marine insurer North has issued ‘quick and simple’ guidance for seafarers on IMO 2020 compliance.
In a statement issued today (11 December), North said that the new series – entitled 2020 Shorts – gets ‘back to basics’ to give seafarers the key information they need.
The first two reference guides in the series are:
Know Your Fuel. Produced in conjunction with Innospec, this guide looks at the ‘new generation of marine fuels’. North commented: ‘Characteristics can vary massively between very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) products and they will need storing and handling differently.’
Preparing for Port State. North cautioned that while the sulphur cap regulation is set by the IMO, enforcement is the responsibility of the individual states and ‘how it is enforced may vary as will any penalties imposed for non-compliance’.This guide advises seafarers of what to expect from Port State Control (PSC) and also provides a checklist of what to consider when preparing for an inspection.
