The Captain of the Port of Gibraltar has confirmed that work to remove the cargo from the grounded OS 35 bulker carrier has begun with the first batches of cargo removed from Cargo Hold 3.
Captain John Ghio has also received confirmation that the tug Koole 31 and towing barge K10030 have departed from Brest and are expected to arrive in Gibraltar before the end of the month, weather permitting.
Commenting on Friday (20 January), Ghio said: ‘Today’s developments represent important progress towards the removal of the wreck and its contents.’
As previously reported, the OS 35 was carrying 215 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 250 tonnes of diesel when it clipped the ADAM LNG off Catalan Bay at the end of August. Following the incident, the Gibraltar Port Authority confirmed a leak of fuel oil from the vessel.
In October, the owners of the OS 35 were given until 30 May 2023 by the Government of Gibraltar to remove the vessel.
