Norway’s Port of Flåm has been granted funding from ENOVA – the Norwegian government enterprise responsible for promotion of environmentally friendly energy schemes – to build onshore power supply facilities for cruise ships.
In a statement issued on Sunday (21 June), the Port of Flåm said that ENOVA is providing NKr 27 million, which will go towards the overall project cost of Nkr83 million. This will include the installation of an underwater cable running directly from the hydro power station in Aurland to Flåm. The Port of Flåm said that the cable ‘will accommodate future demands and open for development and innovation’.
Commenting on the ENOVA grant, Tor Mikkel Tokvam – Port Director, Port of Flåm, said: ‘This was big and important news for us. This shows that we are ready for a changeover. Now we need to find a balance when it comes to the OPS facility and the opportunities it gives us. It now needs to be seen in context with the regulations for the World Heritage Fjords set by the Norwegian Maritime Authority and the Norwegian Parliaments decision to make the world heritage fjords emission free in 2026. Now it is important to find a future-oriented strategy that benefits public health and the environment in the world heritage fjords while safeguarding the foundation of creating value locally.’
A growing number of European ports are now installing shore power facilities As Bunkerspot reported earlier this morning, the ports of Bremen are looking to have extensive new facilities in place by 2023.
