Gasum has announced that its chartered LNG bunkering vessel Kairos will be running on bio-LNG in order to generate more compliance credits for the customers of its FuelEU Maritime (FEUM) pooling service.
In a statement issued today (9 May), Gasum said that it has reached an agreement with the vessel owner Bernhard Schulte that, going forward, the Kairos will run on waste-based bio-LNG.
FEUM allows for the voluntary pooling of emission reductions between vessels, so vessels that are over-compliant can compensate emissions on behalf of under-compliant vessels, thereby providing ‘compliance as a service’.
Gasum already provides over-compliance for its pool members by supplying low-emission bio-LNG to ships, and having the Kairos running on bio-LNG will strengthen its offering.
Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime, Gasum, commented: ‘This step makes it even simpler for us to ensure the needed emission reductions to our pool at all times. According to expert estimates there will be much more compliance deficit than there is surplus on offer at the end of 2025, which makes this all the more important.’
Christian Breuel, Managing Director Tankers, Bernhard Schulte, added: ‘We are very pleased that Gasum, as charterer, has made the decision to use bio-LNG and that the Kairos will thus reduce its carbon footprint even further. We need joint efforts and solutions to decarbonise shipping.’
