Extending its ongoing series of whitepapers examining the various alternative fuel options for the shipping industry, ABS has published new guidance on methanol as marine fuel.

The guidance builds on ABS research developed in Setting the Course to Low Carbon Shipping: Pathways to Sustainable Shipping.

In a statement sent to Bunkerspot today (25 February), Georgios Plevrakis, ABS Director, Global Sustainability, said: ‘Due to its potential to reduce the CO2 footprint of marine operations, applications of methanol are drawing a wider interest from owners of oceangoing vessels, short sea shippers, ferries, cruises, and inland waterway vessels.

‘While methanol’s uptake and application as a marine fuel is only beginning, ABS is committed to ensuring owners, operators, shipbuilders and original equipment manufacturers are fully informed about its potential as they develop their decarbonisation strategies.’

Gregory Dolan, the Chief Executive Officer of the Methanol Institute, added: ‘Methanol is a fuel that offers immediate decarbonisation benefits to vessel operators of substantial net GHG reductions and full compliance with IMO 2020, with a pathway that leads to net carbon neutrality as production of renewable Methanol grows. We welcome the ABS Guidance Methanol as Marine Fuel as a timely addition to the body of reference material available to help designers, shipyards, owners and charterers understand the opportunity that methanol presents.’

ABS has also published white papers on the use of ammonia and LNG.
