Grieg Edge, the innovation hub of Norwegian shipping group Grieg Star, has awarded a contract to naval architect company LMG Marin to design the ammonia-fuelled tanker MS Green Ammonia.
A concept design is expected to be finalised by the first half of 2022, Grieg Edge said yesterday (15 November).
As previously reported, together with Wärtsilä, Grieg Edge plans to launch one of the world’s first green ammonia-fuelled green ammonia tankers, which will distribute the product from a planned factory in Berlevåg, Norway to various locations and end-users along the coast, in 2024. The project development receive partial funding from the Norwegian funding scheme Pilot-E in December 2020.
The team will spend the next months developing different conceptual ideas for MS Green Ammonia before they settle on a chosen concept design. The target is to get an Approval In Principle (AIP) from a class society by the end of the first half of 2022.
‘LMG Marin is honoured to be selected by Grieg Edge to provide design services for MS Ammonia, said Managing Director of LMG Marin, Torbjørn Bringedal. ‘We appreciate working with ambitious clients such as Grieg Edge that are pushing new green technologies to realisation.’
With an AIP in place, detailed engineering will commence during the summer of 2022, with a scheduled launch of MS Green Ammonia in 2024.
