South Korea’s K Shipbuilding has announced it received Approval In Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its ammonia dual-fuel propulsion, medium-sized petrochemical product carrier.
The AiP was awarded on 30 December, K Shipbuilding said in a statement issued today (10 January).
As previously reported by Bunkerspot, the vessel is equipped with WinGD’s 6X52DF-A engine, which is scheduled for commercialisation for the first time this year, and the ammonia fuel supply system was jointly developed with Alfa Laval.
K Shipbuilding has already developed an ammonia dual-fuel propulsion medium-sized petrochemical product carrier based on the concept engine of MAN ES in 2022 and obtained AIP certification from Lloyd’s Register (LR).
‘We have continuously worked on the development of eco-friendly ships such as LNG, methanol, and ammonia fuels, and this certification has allowed us to further expand our eco-friendly dual-fuel propulsion ship design technology,’ said K Shipbuilding, adding, ‘we will continue to do our best in technological innovation for the development of eco-friendly ships.’
