Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP) has filed in rem and personam writ against Rising Star Shipping Sdn Bhd (RSS) and The Shipowners’ Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association's Singapore branch following incident in August 2016.
The incident occurred whilst the 105,996 DWT MT Trident Star crude oil tanker was taking on 2,500 metric tonnes of bunkers at the VTTI-owned Tanjung Bin terminal. An overflow from one of its tanks onto the upper deck of the vessel resulted in fuel being spilled into the sea.
‘The oil spill thereafter spread out into the adjacent waters and towards PTP’s premises causing oil pollution damage,’ MMC informed in a filing with Bursa Malaysia. ‘As a result, PTP suffered various and substantial losses.’
PTP is claiming against RSS and the Club for RM31,862,212 ($7.4 million) for PTP’s losses as a result of the incident with interest at the rate of 5% per annum on the sum from the date of commencement of the suit until the date of full and final payment.
