Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) subsidiary Euro Marine Logistics (EML) has started sea trialling the use of biofuels onboard the car carrier, the City Of Oslo.

MOL announced today (30 June) that EML has signed a deal for biofuel supply with Netherlands-based GoodFuels and about 370 tonnes of biofuel were bunkered on the vessel at the Dutch port of Flushing.

The shipping company also said that the GoodFuels' biofuel, which can be used on vessels without changing engine specifications, is produced ‘using raw materials that do not lead to deforestation and food supply issues’.

Earlier this month, another major shipowner, United European Car Carriers (UECC), told Bunkerspot that it has been trialling the use of biofuels supplied by GoodFuels since March 2020 – bunkering more than 6,000 tonnes of the fuel in the process – and it plans to incorporate biofuels in its bunker portfolio.

Last week, GoodFuels announced that it will be working with theNorwegian environmental non-profit organisation ZERO to support shipping’s energy transition, and one element of the partnership will be to establish framework conditions for sustainable biofuels in the Nordics.
